How do discount stack across channels?

In this article, we breakdown which promotions stack across the primary OTAs - Airbnb, Booking.com, and Vrbo.

Airbnb

On Airbnb, only one primary discount applies per night. If multiple discounts are active for the same dates, Airbnb applies them in priority order:

  1. New listing promotion

  2. Custom promotion

  3. Length-of-stay discount

  4. Early-bird discount

  5. Last-minute discount

If a rule set is configured for specific dates, it applies first. Any discount is then calculated on top of the rule-set price, not the original base price.

The non-refundable rate is the exception - it stacks on top of everything and is calculated after all other discounts have been applied. This is because it is technically not considered a promotion, rather a different rate plan.

The Top Rated Guest discount - available for guests rated 4.8 or higher with at least 3 reviews - is the one discount that can combine with any of the primary discounts above. It applies in addition to whichever discount is already active for that night. For full details, see Airbnb's discount help article.

Note: we don't currently recommend enabling the Top Rated Guest discount as part of your standard setup. The discount structures already in place cover the conversion and algorithmic goals without it. If you're considering it, reach out and we'll share our thoughts.

For a detailed breakdown of how Airbnb calculates rates when promotions and rule sets combine, see Combining discounts and rule-sets.

Vrbo

On Vrbo, multiple promotions can be active at the same time, but only one applies per booking - whichever offers the deepest discount.

Length-of-stay discounts - weekly and monthly - are the exception. These stack with a single promotion. When stacking occurs, the promotion is calculated on top of the already-discounted rate, not the original base rate.

For full details, see Vrbo's promotions help article.

Booking.com

On Booking.com, multiple promotions can be active, but generally only one applies per booking - the one offering the deepest discount.

The exception is that certain promotion types do stack with targeted rates, mobile rates, and Genius discounts. This is worth being aware of because stacking on Booking.com can push the final guest-facing rate lower than intended if multiple discounts are combining. We factor this into how we configure promotions on the platform.
